Understanding Androgenetic Hair Loss

Hair loss isn’t just a cosmetic concern; it’s a signal your body is sending. The most common type of hair loss is Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA), often referred to as genetic or male/female pattern hair loss. Recognizing the signs early and understanding what’s happening inside your body can make all the difference in stabilizing the loss and utilizing treatments to remind the hair follicles to stay active and grow.

What AGA Looks Like in Women

Unlike men, female hair loss often looks subtle at first, but there are clear signs to watch for:

  • Widening part: The center part of your hair may appear broader than before.

  • Thinning on top: The top area of your head may have thinner strands than the back..

  • Increased scalp visibility: You may notice more scalp showing through your hair.

  • Temple thinning: Some women notice thinning around the temples,

These changes often appear gradually, but by the time you notice them, the process has usually been brewing beneath the surface for several years.

What’s Happening Inside Your Body

Androgenetic hair loss is largely influenced by genetics, but it doesn’t act alone. Certain internal factors can accelerate the process, including:

  • Hormonal shifts: Changes in androgens (male hormones), perimenopause/menopause, or conditions like PCOS can trigger hair thinning.

  • Stress: Chronic stress impacts hormone balance and can contribute to hair loss. Your body thinks its in survival mode. This affects more than just our hair.

  • Insulin resistance and blood sugar issues: Metabolic changes can influence hair follicle health.

  • Medical conditions: Thyroid disorders and other health issues can exacerbate hair loss.

Understanding what’s happening beneath the surface is essential. It allows us to address not just the symptoms, but the root causes of your hair loss.

How We Approach Treatment

Androgenetic hair loss is progressive, meaning it can worsen over time if left unaddressed. That’s why early intervention is key. In my practice, I focus on a personalized, multi-therapeutic approach:

  1. In-depth analysis: We assess your scalp, hair density, and follicles to understand your unique situation.

  2. Comprehensive history review: We discuss your medical background, medications, hormones, nutrition, sleep, lifestyle and routines to identify contributing factors.

  3. Customized plan: Based on the analysis and history, we create a targeted plan that fits your lifestyle and addresses your specific needs. This may include supplements, medications, topical treatments, at-home LLLT, nutritional support, lifestyle adjustments, and advanced therapies such as Alma TED or microneedling.

Why Acting Quickly Matters

Because AGA is progressive, the sooner you stabilize your hair, the better your results. Once physical signs of thinning are visible, it’s a clear signal to take action. While it’s impossible to change your genetics, you can influence the course of hair loss and preserve what you have. Early intervention helps maintain hair density, improve scalp health, and support long-term hair growth.

What This Means for You

If you’ve noticed a widening part, recession or thinning at the temples, thinning on top, or more scalp showing through your hair, trust your instincts. These signs are your body’s way of telling you that it’s time to act now! Hair loss DOES NOT have to define your story.

I help women & men experiencing hair loss, take control by addressing the root causes, not just the symptoms. When it comes to AGA, early awareness and action are so important. Let’s uncover what’s happening with your hair and create a plan just for you. Schedule your personalized evaluation here.
