Telogen Effluvium Hair Loss: Why Sudden Shedding Happens and What You Can Do About It

Have you suddenly started noticing more hair in your brush, shower drain, or on your bathroom floor? If the shedding seems to have appeared out of nowhere, you may be experiencing Telogen Effluvium (TE), one of the most common forms of temporary hair loss I see in my practice.

While TE is often temporary, that doesn't mean you have to simply sit back and wait months for your hair to recover. Understanding what's happening and knowing your options can help you regain both your hair and your confidence sooner.

What Is Telogen Effluvium?

Most people notice increased shedding 2 to 4 months after the triggering event.

Common triggers include:

  • GLP-1 medications and rapid weight loss

  • Pregnancy and postpartum hormone changes

  • Nutritional deficiencies

  • Viral illnesses, including COVID-19

  • Starting a new medication

  • Surgery

  • Emotional stress or a significant life event

Because of this delay, many people don't connect their hair loss to something that happened several months earlier.

How Long Does Telogen Effluvium Last?

For many people, the shedding phase lasts approximately 3 to 6 months.

Once the trigger has resolved, new hair growth often begins around the six-month mark. However, visible improvement takes time because hair grows slowly, averaging about half an inch per month.

If you're over 50, regrowth may occur more slowly than it did years ago, making the recovery process feel even longer.

When Telogen Effluvium Becomes Chronic

Not every case follows the typical timeline. If the underlying trigger remains active, the shedding can continue. This is known as Chronic Telogen Effluvium.

Some ongoing triggers include:

  • Long COVID

  • Chronic high stress

  • Hormonal responses to certain IUDs

  • Ongoing nutritional deficiencies

  • Uncontrolled medical conditions

In these situations, identifying and addressing the underlying cause is one of the most important steps toward healthy regrowth.

A Real Patient Success Story

One of my patients, a woman in her 70s, came to me after experiencing dramatic hair thinning following a COVID infection.

She noticed significant scalp visibility and felt like her hair had become much thinner than it had ever been. Initially, she decided to try wearing a topper to help camouflage the thinning.

She had also visited a doctor who identified COVID as the likely trigger. She had seen a celebrity on Instagram talk about her own hair loss and mention that she had undergone a few TED hair restoration treatments. That's when she contacted me to learn more about Alma TED.

We started with a discovery call, followed by an in-person visit, where we reviewed her health history, lifestyle, nutrition, and hair goals. After discussing her options, we agreed that TED would be an excellent fit for her situation.

Her treatment plan included:

  • Three Alma TED treatments spaced about one month apart

  • A booster treatment six months later that included exosomes

The results were remarkable. Not only did she experience healthy new growth, but the quality of her existing hair also improved. Today, she plans to continue with annual maintenance treatments as part of her healthy aging and hair preservation routine.

Her outcome was especially successful because her hair loss had a single, clearly identified trigger, and she maintained an overall healthy lifestyle that supported the regrowth process.

Do You Have to Wait for Hair to Grow Back?

Technically, yes.

If the trigger has resolved, your hair will often begin growing back naturally over time.

But that doesn't mean waiting is the only option. Many of my clients want to encourage healthy regrowth as soon as possible rather than waiting months or even longer for noticeable improvement.

This is especially true when age-related hair changes are also present. As we age, our hair naturally becomes finer, grows more slowly, and has a shorter growth cycle. Supporting the scalp and follicles during recovery can help optimize both the speed and quality of new growth.

The best decision is the one that aligns with your goals, timeline, and overall health.

When Should You Seek Help?

If you've noticed excessive shedding that has continued for several months, or you're unsure what's causing your hair loss, it's worth having your scalp and hair professionally assessed.

One of the most important parts of my approach is determining why you're losing hair before recommending treatment. Every person's situation is different, and understanding the underlying contributing factors allows us to create a plan that's appropriate for your unique needs.

Whether your hair shedding or hair loss is related to illness, stress, hormones, medications, nutrient deficiencies, or aging, identifying the trigger is the first step toward healthier hair.

If you're in the Twin Cities or Edina area, I'd love to help you better understand what's happening with your hair. I also work with clients virtually across the country, making expert trichology care accessible no matter where you live.
